What you missed - Made in California 2023

Our 38th Annual Juried Made in California Exhibition made its opening on April 29th and ran to June 23, 2023. Every year we receive a steady increase in submissions, and so does the challenge in selecting the best artworks. It is not an easy task for the jury, but we are still honored to host so much talent this year from all over California. Alongside this exhibition, we also handed out awards and announced Popular choice winner. If you weren’t able to catch this year’s, here is what you missed:

Walk through Made in California

All photography captured by Francis Gracad.

As you catch a walk through the Brea Gallery and immerse yourself in the latest show, you'll find yourself lost in another world. All of our artists range in age and location across California, some as far as Oakland and San Diego! But there is still a sense of unity amongst all these artists through their skills, stories and inspirations. We enjoyed all the conversations surrounding this year’s Made in California, and look forward to next year’s already!

If you weren’t able to make it for a visit, we also have a full walk through video available on our Youtube that captures the show in its entirety, linked here.

Artist Takeovers on Instagram

A little different from previous years, we held Artist Takeovers on our Instagram (@breagallery) every weekend throughout the Made in California exhibition. This was an opportunity for artists interested in showcasing themselves and their artwork on our social media platform. Not only did we receive positive feedback from our supporters, but we also noticed a better connection between the artist and artwork! Being able to view the story and face behind a favorite artwork awards a better appreciation, so we thank everyone for their ever-growing curiosity to learn more about us and our artists.

Artists participating in our Instagram Takeover: Heidi Brueckner, Heather Allison, Gina Teichert, Denise Brook, Julie Beloussow, Daisy Crane, Stephanie Sherwood, Derick Edwards, Chris Moore, Indie Courtney, Isabella King, Amanda Kazemi, Key Dyer and Natasha Rindt.

These images are just a quick peak at the posts selected artists made specially for their Instagram Takeover, and you can find out more about our artists on our website as well! The link to finding out more about artists in Made in California will be available here. If you would like to see these posts in more detail, you can scroll down on our instagram which is linked here.

Made in California playlist

Every year we make a new playlist for Made in California that represents how fun, colorful and innovative the selected artworks look together. We play this playlist pretty often during gallery hours, so if you were ever curious about listening to it on your own, check it out!

You can find the playlist here and you can follow us on spotify @Brea Gallery!

Popular choice award

Every year, we also hold a competition for Popular Choice award. This award is based on the popular vote from guess who…all of you! We ask our guests and anyone who has seen Made in California to cast their vote for their favorite piece throughout the exhibition. It’s always exciting hearing what everyone’s favorite piece is while they cast their vote, and makes the tension high to see who will win! We wait until the very end to review all the votes, and this year’s award winner is Natasha Rindt! Congratulations and thank you to everyone who participated in voting for our Popular Choice award.

Closing Reception

Similar to our opening night, we had a great a turnout of supporters and artists to finish out our spring exhibition Made in California. As sad as we are to see it all go, we are still very happy and proud of how well this exhibition went. We hope you enjoyed seeing all of these artists from all over California, learning more about them and connecting with us over our favorite thing, art!
