Brea Gallery presents

Bitter/Sweet

February 1 - March 21, 2025

Bitter/Sweet honors the euphoria and despair inextricably tied to our most personal moments, the beginning and completion of life stages, and the triumphs and challenges in between. Through a diverse range of artwork and mediums, this exhibition delves into moments of waiting, working, mourning, and celebrating within liminal spaces—those in-between times filled with transition and uncertainty. Bitter/Sweet, based on a concept inspired by Reed van Brunschot’s artwork, is an intimate and evocative opportunity that invites reflection on life’s bittersweet nature, offering a poignant look at the memories and emotions that shape us.

[Brunschot's] artworks take on displacement, daily life through the ‘transitional moment’, one in which a given situation suddenly and unexpectedly changes, be it in form or in sentiment. By building relationships between unexpected elements, through materialization, or correlation to the viewer, there is an emphasis on a dialog between the human, and the absurd object. Speaking in quotidian symbolism, her practice is based on themes of childhood, home life and all things ephemeral.
