Brea Gallery is proud to present 99 Voices in Pastel by the artists of the Pastel Society of the West Coast. Pastels typically come in the form of short sticks of pigment and binder. Used by artists since the Renaissance, they gained popularity in the 18th century when notable artists like Mary Cassatt, รdouard Manet, and Edgar Degas made pastels their primary medium.
Founded in 1985, the Pastel Society of the West Coast has grown to become the second largest pastel association in the United States. PSWCโs mission is to provide opportunities and encourage the use of pastels with education and competition. The group offers workshops, demonstrations, and regional events throughout the country. They also hold two major competitions each year, awarding thousands of dollars to outstanding artists.
