Gina Teichert paints the dichotomy of the American West - from fractured fairy tales about rural living to the growing friction between humans and wildlife. Teichert’s poppy, wry take on Western subject matter is exemplified in works like Apex - the artist’s serpentine piece for Made in California - and Eminent Domain, a skulking pack of urban coyotes.
Alternating between juicy mark making and naïve linework, Teichert tips her hat to the raked canvases of Wayne Thiebaud and the gobstopper striations of Chuck Close. The artist was born in the Great Basin and moved to San Francisco where she studied at the Academy of Art University and later served as a gallery guide and youth art instructor at SFMOMA. Striking a balance between those two worlds, today she calls a hot, dry, snake filled hill in rural Napa County home.
Teichert’s work has been shown at de Young Museum, Cheyenne Frontier Days Old West Museum, West Coast Biennial, and Coors Young Guns. In 2018, Alaska Airlines acquired her piece, Outerlands, which now welcomes travelers to San Francisco International Airport.
