Jang Lee is a medical student at Stanford University and painter based in the Bay Area. He has interests in contemporary portraiture and figure. The piece “Abundance” was inspired by a picture he took of his grandfather when Jang was visiting Korea for the first time since immigrating to America in 2001. Jang’s grandfather greeted him warmly and began cutting fruit for him. Jang was struck by this simple gesture of love despite their sparse history together. His grandfather passed away one year later, and their brief encounter remains to be the only memory Jang has of him. This painting not only captures the sharing of food, but also the intimate cultural and historical ties that connect families together.
