One's perception of the built environment is influenced by a variety of factors. I believe that the human psyche is powerfully influenced by intangible factors that are oftentimes overlooked. These include spatial transitions, the psychological effect of views, and different qualities of natural light.
As an artist and designer, I am interested in the relationship between these intangible spatial qualities and physical objects, materials, and landscapes. I believe that a careful arrangement of all these elements can elicit profound and spiritual experiences within people as they inhabit the built environment. The intention behind my work is to visualize meaningful compositions of spatial elements and evoke feelings of contemplation. My work draws from observations of my immediate environments and personal experiences to help achieve this.
When I created Self Portrait 2021, the impact of COVID-19 was still in full effect throughout the world. Due to the virtualization of universities, I was living at my childhood home during my final year of the MFA program at San Diego State University. I painted a self-portrait to reflect on my state of mind. In the artwork, my face is replaced by a building and space that is very personal to me. The specific architectural forms, colors, and light qualities of the painting are representations of my thoughts and personality.
