Lupe Backe

Lupe Backe is a self-taught artist from Downey, California. She worked as an aerospace engineer in Southern California for 24 years before retiring in 2009.  Since then she has picked up the threads of a lifelong interest in art and dedicated herself to perfecting her artistic skills. 

Lupe focused on colored pencils as the first medium to explore in her new artistic life. She joined the Los Angeles CPSA chapter DC214 in 2009, where she met many talented colored pencil artists and received much encouragement and support. She was lucky enough to begin her exploration of using colored pencils when the quality and availability of materials for the colored pencil artist has exploded.

The last few years have been very enjoyable. Working mostly on portraits and figurative subjects, she has learned new techniques, honed her skills and gained more confidence.  Lupe looks forward to completing many more colored pencil projects in the future, though maybe at a little faster pace.
