Margaret (Margi) Hopkins

“Each piece I paint tells a story. And as I continue to grow as an artist, I've learned to trust intuition over aesthetic theory. When a reference photo sparks, perhaps there’s an interesting perspective, dramatic lighting, engaging colors, a quizzical expression or texture that titillates; the trick, is to recognize and nurture that initial inspiration.”

Margi Hopkins, CPSA, SAA, paints with colored pencil, mixing pigments together on her surface via burnishing and or the use of solvents. The surfaces vary, chosen specifically for texture and color specific to her needs.

She is a signature member of the Colored Pencil Society of America, a signature member of The Society of Animal Artists and currently the director of Masterworks for Nature, a group of wildlife artists who create art for conservation and nonprofit fundraising. Margi holds a BFA from Denison University, Granville Ohio.

Margi started Pepper Portraits in 2001, specializing in people and pet portraiture. She exhibits both locally and nationally and works with Row House Gallery in Milford OH. She has authored artist demonstrations for Ann Kullberg’s Colored Pencil Magazine, taught artist workshops, as well as provided artwork for various books and publications such as JAVMA.

Margi retired from 19 years as a Veterinary Assistant to work full time on portraiture. She resides in Clay Township OH.
