Matthew Brabant is a photographer with fieldwork in photojournalism, commercial, and fine art photography. He is based in Riverside, where he also teaches as the Assistant Professor of Photography at Riverside City College.
During the early pandemic, Matthew began a series titled Domesticity and Belonging that focused on the intense changes of motherhood and adulthood and navigating the sense of belonging and comfort. In his body of work, tableaus are used allegorically to define boundaries and investigate conflict, personal loss, emotions, and coexistence during a global pandemic.
“Housing insecurity during the pandemic forced the artist’s mother and mother-in-law to move in, the line between motherhood and adulthood of their adult children became blurred and the works in the body of work show the narrative of the struggle between mothering and existing. Furthermore, it follows the path of individuality within the confines of a group.”
