Purpose:
Made in California at the Brea Gallery serves to recognize, uplift, and celebrate California artists from all backgrounds. This new fee-waiver program works towards specifically supporting artists in marginalized communities by attempting to make participation in juried shows more accessible and equitable.
This program will support artists from a broad spectrum of artistic practices, backgrounds, geographies and communities, by allowing them to submit a collection of work as a Solo Show for the Made in California exhibition, free of charge.
This fee- waiver program is only a small step in leveling the playing field for those artists who may not have the same opportunities to participate in juried exhibitions and add then to their resume.
The Brea Gallery is committed to diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility.
What is the MICA Solo Show:
The Solo Show opportunity is a chance for artists to have their own solo exhibition in the Gallery that would run concurrent to the greater Made in California Juried Exhibition, and would include a separate title wall, show card, and a $350 cash prize.
For this program, artists will be able to submit between 5 and 10 pieces, along with an artist statement, with the standard fee of $80 waived. By doing so, these artists will be considered for the one Solo Show opportunity, as well, if an artist is not selected for the solo show, each individual piece submitted will then be considered by the jurors for the greater juried exhibition and would be eligible for all of the other awards (First, Second, etc.).
