Virtual Artist in Residence
For the past few years, the Brea Gallery has dedicated one weekend, per exhibition, in which we invite our visitors into the artistic process.
The Gallery hosts two local artists to create live in our space for two days over the weekend. This allows visitors to take photos, video, ask questions, and observe the artists’s process. We have loved having artists in the Gallery and we know visitors get a more interesting and richer experience from their visit.
Since the current shutdown, and the Gallery has been closed to the public, we decided to take our Artist-in-Residence program, Fresh{AIR}, online!
Now taking place on the Gallery’s Instagram account every other weekend, an invited artist will takeover the account to give followers a chance to send in questions, with go live to include viewers in their process and even provide a small window into their daily activities during their quarantine.
This has been such an unexpected benefit to the Gallery’s closure, as this digital event allows art lovers from all regions to enjoy and take part of these events. We can invite those who normally are unable to get to our space to experience the Gallery for the first time. It also means that the Gallery can provide an additional platform for artists who have also moved their business online.
To date, we have hosted several artists:
April 18th and 19th - The Happy Joy
May 2nd and 3rd - Betsy Enzensberger
May 16th and 17th - Rust + Roze
May 30th and 31st - Ingrid V. Wells
Artists give video tours of their workspaces and show viewers the products they use and like. They also post time-lapse videos of them working on various projects. Lottie Frick of Rust + Roze had a great time-lapse of weaving a custom piece for a client and Betsy Enzensberger did a resin pouring video. Patrick (The Happy Joy) flipped through old sketch books giving viewers a peek into his ideas and pre-planning of future paintings. Patrick also went live on Instagram while working on a piece while answering questions from curious onlookers. Betsy gave away handmade earrings and Lottie offered a coupon for her online shop just for Brea Gallery followers. Feel free to post or message us what you’d like to see an artist share.
