Artful Sound Concert - Event Review
Savoring Art with Music, Wine, and Food
On November 16th, 2024, the Orchestra Collective of Orange County returned to the Brea Gallery for the second enchanting installment of Artful Sounds! In collaboration with the Curtis Theater, the gallery opened its doors to over 40 guests, inviting them to a magical evening brimming with food, wine, art, and music. This delightful concert was paired with the mesmerizing 99 Voices in Pastels exhibition, showcasing the talents of artists from the Pastel Society of the West Coast.
At 5pm guests entered the gallery, welcomed by a tantalizing and delicious spread. Chicken skewers, empanadas, bruschetta, and a beautiful platter of fruits and cheeses from Alicia’s Cookery, a beloved local business. Alongside these treats, a selection of wine, champagne, and beer were enjoyed while admiring the pastel creations adorning the walls.
Though 99 Voices in Pastel has now closed, we can still revel in the memories of this extraordinary event, where art and music intertwined seamlessly. Once guests ordered one more drink and settled into their seats, Brea Gallery Director Katie Chidester warmly welcomed everyone to the gallery and introduced the esteemed Music Director and Conductor of the Orchestra Collective, David Rentz.
Rentz shared the uniqueness of the evening's string quartet. Typically comprising two violins, one viola, and one cello, this night’s ensemble was an enchanting variation, featuring the deep, resonant voices of four cellos.
The gallery space underwent a transformation as the event began. The lights dimmed, leaving a spotlight on the musicians, while a soft purple glow adorned the gallery walls. The space was overcome with tranquility, inviting guests to gaze at the musicians, let their eyes wander to the softly illuminated artwork, or close their eyes and feel the profound resonance of the cellos. The evening featured enchanting pieces by Ludwig Van Beethoven, J.S. Bach, Wilhelm Fitzenhagen, Andrea Rellini, and Astor Piazzolla.
Before diving into Bach's composition, cellist John Rasmussen shared his insights and studies on the piece. He demonstrated different interpretations, and the audience had the opportunity to vote on their favorite version. This interactive moment wove the audience's input into the evening's performance.
The compositions flowed seamlessly, one after another, filling the 60 minutes with tranquil and powerful melodies. Guests shared their admiration for the cello performance within the gallery setting, noting the uniqueness of the cello quartet and the impressive range they achieved.
As the event concluded, sweet desserts were served, and guests were invited to explore the gallery once more, now with a deeper sense of comfort and appreciation. A special 10% discount at the gallery gift shop added a festive touch, perfect for kickstarting holiday shopping.
On this night, the gallery was the host of a unique musical experience—a cello quartet performance where music reflected in the frames of the artwork, allowing guests to immerse themselves fully in the visual and performing arts.
