Made in California 2022 Juror

Made in California 2022 Juror

The Brea Gallery is very excited that Juliana Rico is our 2022 Made in California Guest Juror. Juliana is a fantastic artist who has been accepted into previous Made in California exhibits, as well as, showing her work in a number of curated group shows at the gallery.

Juliana joins Brea Gallery Director, Heather Bowling and the curatorial staff as the ajudicators of the 2022 Made in California juried exhibition.

This video is from the 2021 art show Taking Up Space and features Juliana discussing her artistic practice and how her identity continues to inform who she is and how she creates.

Each year, Made in California is juried by a panel comprised of Gallery Director Heather Bowling, curatorial staff, and a guest juror from the California art scene. Employing a democratic points-based scoring system, each piece submitted gets scored by each juror, and the pieces with the highest scores are accepted into the show. This year the Brea Gallery is thrilled to be working with artist, educator, and activist Juliana Rico as our Guest Juror.

Juliana Rico (she/they) is an award winning, nationally showcased, queer, Latinx, visual artist working primarily in photography and video. She earned her MFA & BFA in Art with an emphasis in Photography from California State University Fullerton and San Jose State University respectively. Rico’s artistic practice draws from her intersectional multifaceted identity to question and counter societal defaults, especially in relationship to the body. Her work as an artist and educator is to carve out space for the voices of so many underrepresented groups who have not seen themselves reflected in art, media, history, and education.

Rico is a passionate advocate for social justice, student success, diversity, equity, and authentic representation in educational and arts and culture spaces. In 2012 she co-founded the Emerging Artist Society, an artist community built upon sharing resources and aiding emerging artists in professional development. In 2021 she started Art in Motion Podcast, focusing on the stories of BIPOC creatives. She teaches photography at several colleges in Southern California and mentors independently and through community organizations.

After the juried artwork is selected, Juliana will be selecting awards for the exhibit, announce right after the show opens April 30th. Stay tuned!
